Oh, the black season! A very difficult type of literature is poetry. Poetry is very hard to understand especially when students or anyone is analyzing it under pressure or being forced. When poetry is not being forced to study, it is generally taken more serious and it is easier for poetry to be understood. Poetry can be linked to music in many ways. Some ways can be by the type of genre, lyrics, emotion and pictures. Emotion is the easiest way to relate two pieces of information together. This is the easiest way because no one will feel exactly the same as you. The poem that I have chosen to go with the song is How come, How long by Babyface featuring Stevie Wonder and for my poem is Song be delicate by J. Shaw Neilson. The poem and the song is linked by love, and death. In the poem it says that there should be lovers everywhere, and death is just so open, because you can die in many ways and in the song it says that this girl falls in love with the wrong kind of man and she paid with her life for loving that man. This poem can be interpreted so many ways because the poem uses open words which can be taken in more than one way. The song that I have I think can only be taken one way because it is like a story in a way. In order to show you that a poem can be read in more than one way, I will show you two different treading on the poem Song be delicate by J. Shaw Neilson. Line 1, means that let the words that you speak be gentle and sentimental. Line 2-3 means that there should be happiness every where instead of war. Line 3-4 means that lovers comes out from where they are when there is happiness and no war. Line 5 is the same as line 1. Line 6-8 means that love can be taken seriously and not seriously. It depends o how you take it on the result. If you take it not seriously you will find that you relationship will breakdown and you will be crying if you wanted to take a seriously. Line 9 is the same as Line 5 and 1. This part of the poem means that all different kinds of people can understand different kinds of people can understand different kinds of things. Line 13 is the same as line 9,5 and 1. Line 14-16 means that when the people and go home their love is not appreciated enough, but they feel safe at homes. Line 17 is the same as line 13,9,5 and 1. Line 18-20 means that death is open in many ways that you can die, there should not be no one to be happy about death. Death is a time when you should be thankful for who they were. Line 1 means that the person that you love is being protected. Line 2-4 means that there should be no war in the world so there is lovers everywhere. Not so. Consider this email message recently sent to all staff members on a large university campus: It is time to renew your faculty/staff parking decals. New decals are required by Nov. 1. Parking Rules and Regulations require that all vehicles driven on campus must display the current decal. Slapping a Hi! in front of this message doesnt solve the problem. It only adds a false air of chumminess. Instead, consider how much nicer and shorter- and probably more effective- the email would be if we simply added a please and addressed the reader directly: Please renew your faculty/staff parking decals by November 1. Of course, if the author of the email had truly kept readers in mind, they might have included another useful tidbit: a clue as to how and where to renew the decals. Using the email about the parking decals as an example, try incorporating these tips into your own writing for better, clearer, more effective emails: Always fill in the subject line with a topic that means something to your reader. However, if a marriage was to fall apart in a state that does not recognize the couple’s legal status, they will not be able to dissolve their marriage. â€Å"In order to get a divorce from a same-sex partner, they would have to live in a state for six months to two years†, said Susan Sommer, director of constitutional litigation at Lambda Legal (Landau 1).Since several states in America do not allow same-sex marriages, many people do not understand why states are not willing to dissolve these marri ages (Landau 4). However, as shown in this paragraph, same-sex couples are not receiving the same rights as other citizens that marry the opposite sex. The Insanity Defense in Criminal Cases The standard for claiming a defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity has changed through the years from strict guidelines to a more lenient interpretation, and back to a more strict standard again. Although definitions of legal insanity differ from state to state, generally a person is considered insane and is not responsible for criminal conduct if, at the time of the offense, as a result of a severe mental disease or defect, he was unable to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of his acts. This reasoning is, because willfull intent is an essential part of most offenses, a person who is insane is not capable of forming such intent. Mental disease or defect does not alone constitute a legal insanity defense. The defendant has the burden of proving the defense of insanity by clear and convincing evidence. The history of the insanity defense in modern times comes from the 1843 case of Daniel MNaghten, who tried to assassinate the prime minister of Britain and was found not guilty because he was insane at the time. The public outrage after his acquittal prompted the creation of a strict definition of legal insanity which is known as the MNaghten Rule. The MNaghten Rule basically said a person was not legally insane unless he is incapable of appreciating his surroundings because of a powerful mental delusion. The Durham Standard The Durham standard was a much more lenient guideline for the insanity defense, but it addressed the issue of convicting mentally ill defendants, which was allowed under the MNaghten Rule. However, the Durham standard drew much criticism because of its expansive definition of legal insanity. The Model Penal Code, published by the American Law Institute, provided a standard for legal insanity that was a compromise between the strict MNaghten Rule and the lenient Durham ruling. Under the MPC standard, a defendant is not responsible for criminal conduct if at the time of such conduct as a result of mental disease or defect he lacks substantial capacity either to appreciate the criminality of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law. The MPC Standard The MPC standard was popular until 1981, when John Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity under those guidelines for the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. Again, public outrage at Hinckleys acquittal caused lawmakers to pass legislation that reverted back to the strict MNaghten standard, and some states attempted to abolish the insanity defense altogether. Today the standard for proving legal insanity varies widely from state to state, but most jurisdictions have returned to a more strict interpretation of the definition.

Spike Lee's version of Malcolm X's life is similar to the historical Malcolm X. By watching the movie and knowing who he was and his beliefs, one can easily tell how alike they are. When the movie starts Malcolm Little is getting his hair cut. The appearance is that he wants to look more like a white person. Malcolm X's father is a preacher, but the KKK came to the house to burn it down. Later, Malcolm's father is killed by being tied to the rail road tracks when a train comes. His father died when Malcolm was just a child.. After Malcolm's dad died A white woman came to tell Malcolm that they were going to take her kids away because she was an "unsuitable mother". They then sent Malcolm to a detention home which drove his mother insane. While at a club Malcolm met a white girl by the name of Sophia. They later moved in together. When Malcolm was in his early 20's he met a man which got him into the "gangster" life-style. He then began doing drugs. To feel like he was in with everyone else, Malcolm gets new clothes and a a gun. The gang, and Malcolm got into a lot of gambling. Malcolm messed up and almost got himself killed by the gang. Malcolm had to leave town with Sophia and Shorty, because the gang was still after them. Malcolm and Shorty later robbed a man's house and got caught. Shorty and Malcolm are sent to jail for 10 years at Charlestown State Prison for sleeping with a white women and for robbery. In prison, Malcolm got beaten for not knowing his prison number. He met a man named Banes. Banes talked to Malcolm about God. Banes was trying to get Malcolm out of prison. Malcolm finally reads and realizes what he has to do to get out of prison. Malcolm reads the Bible, other books, and he wrote letters to fellow Muslims. Banes teaches Malcolm about Islam religion and Elijah Muhammed. Finally after ten long years Malcolm finally gets out of prison. When Malcolm got out of prison he decided he would go out on the streets and make speeches about the Nation of Islam. After Malcolm became a Muslim, he went to see Archie. The old gang that Malcolm was in is getting in lots of trouble. While involved with the Muslim Nation, Malcolm meets sister Betty. Malcolm falls in love marries Betty and has three children. Brother Banes, a good friend of Malcolm's, gets beaten by police and then the police take him to the prison. Brazilians in Michel de Montaigne's Essay "Of Cannibals" When describing native Brazilian people in his 1580 essay, â€Å"Of Cannibals,† Michel de Montaigne states, â€Å"Truly here are real savages by our standards; for either they must be thoroughly so, or we must be; there is an amazing distance between their character and ours† (158). Montaigne doesn’t always maintain this â€Å"amazing† distance, however, between savages and non-savages or between Brazilians and Europeans; he first portrays Brazilians as non-barbaric people who are not like Europeans, then as non-barbarians who best embody traditional European values, and finally as barbarians who are diametrically opposed to Europeans. First, Montaigne portrays Brazilians as non-barbaric people who are not like Europeans. He asserts, â€Å"I think there is nothing barbarous and savage in that nation†¦except that each man calls barbarism whatever is not his own practice† (152). Through his discussion of certain salient qualities that define these â€Å"other,† non-barbaric, Brazilian people, Montaigne actually elevates the Brazilians above Europeans. For example, he writes, â€Å"Those [Brazilian] people are wild, just as we call wild the fruits that Nature has produced by herself and in her normal course; whereas really it is those that we have changed artificially and led astray from the common order, that we should rather call wild† (152). After likening wild Brazilians to wild fruits, he implies that they both â€Å"retain alive and vigorous their genuine, their most useful and natural, virtues and properties, which we have debased in the [artificial fruits] in adapting them to gratify our corrupted taste† (152). For Montaigne, wildness and natural virtues are characteristics that are u... ...s the superiority of the former to the latter; in the second case, he greatly decreases the distance between the two groups and the level of superiority that Brazilians have over Europeans. Finally, his essay, as a whole, ultimately reinstates a great distance between the two groups, and Europeans reclaim superiority over Brazilians. Notably, in the first two cases, nature is also elevated above art, but art finally subjugates nature. Perhaps this is because Montaigne identifies with â€Å"Lycurgus and Plato†¦ [who] could [not] believe that our society could be maintained with so little artifice and human solder† (153). Montaigne’s essay suggests that he relies on the artifice of his writing and interpretations to explore and define social groups, explore and establish social hierarchies, and maintain social order in a manner that ultimately favors him and his people.

The Idea of Nature and its Essence The idea of nature is one of the most widely employed in philosophy and by the same token one of the most ill-defined. Authors such as Aristotle and Descartes relied on the concept of nature to explain the fundamental tenets of their views, without ever attempting to define the concept. Even in contemporary philosophy, the idea is oftentimes employed, in different forms. So, what is nature? Nature and the Essence of a Thing The philosophical tradition that traces back to Aristotle employs the idea of nature to explain that which defines the essence of a thing. One of the most fundamental metaphysical concepts, the essence indicates those properties that define what a thing is. The essence of water, for instance, will be its molecular structure, the essence of a species, its ancestral history; the essence of a human, its self-consciousness or its soul. Within the Aristotelian traditions, hence, to act in accordance with nature means to take into account the real definition of each thing when dealing with it. The Natural World At times the idea of nature is instead used to refer to anything that exists in the universe as part of the physical world.
